PostSubject: Winter tires time   September 28th 2009, 10:09 am

Looks like winter may hit sooner than expected. Size needed 225/50r17

Looking at some winter tires. Thinking about these,
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Blizzak+WS60&partnum=25R7BZWS60&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

Was thinking about some dunlop wintersports but they seem to be only available in runflat in my size and it's too much $$$.

    Thoughts?

I had the Dunlop Sport 3Ds on Brandons car and they were amazing. I am going to try and round some up for my '08, depending on price. Pretty sure you can get a set of snow tires in town for around $300-$350 mounted and balanced. That is what I was suppose to be doing today, but decided to nap instead. Smile

Yeah I guess the problem with me is that the wintersports in the size I need (the non runflats) have been recalled. they simply don't make them anymore. Sad

I'll have to call around and see what some of the peeps in town have in the size I need.

Why are you interested in a RUNFLAT so bad?

I don't want runflat. What I'm saying is that the wintersports are ONLY available in my size in a runflat model. So I really can't get them. Too much $$. And supposedly people have had traction issues with the runflat model as opposed to the traditional Wintersport 3D.

I want wintersports non-runflats.. but they don't make them in 225/50r17.

That is why I think i'll be getting the Blizzacks.

Well at the very least, I can't find them online for sale. Saw mention of a recall on that particular size.

However I can see them on dunlops website. And retail price is $252 per tire!! HA!

My bad, I read your post wrong. Pretty sure you can go down to Staley's and get a good deal. Those guys are the best, very informative and not a bunch of jerks like TireRama.

You could get a WAY better deal going through someone in town on snow tires. I just looked at the link in your first post and noticed the $142 price tag. OUCH!! You could probably get tires for around $100 apiece mounted and balanced in town. My brother got his for $350 M&B.

The Blizzacks are for sure good winter tires. I have drove several cars with those tires on them and they always impressed me. They might be a little more spendy, but well worth it.

Talked to Staleys. for a set of blizzacks mounted and balanced he originally told me 205 a piece. So thats about $820

Got him down to $195 a piece which is $780 mounted and balanced.

He said if I brought the wheels and tires in, it would be $20-$25 a piece to mount and balance.
I can order them from tirerack for 142 a piece plus shipping which works out to $629 + about $100 for mount and balance from staleys which equals = $729

    So yeah. Fun stuff.

Unless you get a hook up your almost always able to get a better deal on-line than locally. Its crazy how much money you can save. They wanted $500 more for my truck tires locally. I guess there must still be lots of people that don't use the internet!

Just ordered my tires. They are only 'Q' rated (100mph), but I dont think I have even had my car to 100mph in the 2 years I have had it. These got really good reviews.

Forgot to mention, these were only $425 shipped. Pretty good deal if you ask me. I also like the tread design.

Take note the 225/50r17 was very specific for 17" BBS on my particular car. the size you need may be different and affect the price.
You should verify but I believe your car comes with 205/50r17 and if you went with a 225mm width tire you should go with a 225/45r17.. which is the exact size of the tires I pulled off the BBS wheels. I think they are Toyo Garrett Observes snow tires. They have some use but if you want to make an offer you are welcome to. I have them sitting in our storage if you want to see them.

EDIT: haha never mind for some reason i thought you were lookin into 225/50 series my bad.

aw damn what size did you end up getting? Yeah mine are R rated which is like 106 mph. I guess no 120mph flybys in the winter eh? Wink

So ok this is my first time running a dedicated winter tire. Anybody else notice a decrease in MPG and a little less peppyness out of the car on winter tires?

I'm excited too! Now I can't wait for snow haha!

Just got my snow tires mounted yesterday and they are wonderful. Car feels about the same, just a hair softer than before, which of course makes sense with all that rubber.

This mornings drive to work was absolutely fantastic. No slip, No ABS no nothing. She just trudged through like nothin. Gotta love it. Highly recommend a good set of snow tires to anyone this time of year.

I am about to order some snow tires myself. I am curious how you chose that tire size Luke. I thought a 235/45 was the optimal tire size for the GR.

My tires on my car now are 205/55/r16. Should I stick w/ 205/55's or should I look into another size? Does anyone know where I can find chart or some info regarding optimal sizes/applications?

Here's what I'm stuck between... The General's that Mike has and the Winterforce's that Russ has. I have seen both of them in person and they both seem to have great reviews...

I'd go with the general's just because I like the tread pattern better, but either will most likely serve you well.

Stick with your stock size as when it comes to snow going any wider won't do much for you. I went with an oddball size as they don't normally fit 17s on my car and thats what I had to work with.

Speaking of which I threw the summer wheels back on for a while. It's been beautiful outside.
